The 2021 Fort2Fort 5 Mile Challenge with be held both In-Person on Saturday, May 15, 2021 and as a Virtual Race. Proceeds from both events help support the Mackinac Historic State Parks!
The In-Person race will feature a “rolling start” from 8:00 am – 9:30 am, allowing all participants a safe and socially distanced race.
In accordance with current state guidelines, all race participants are required to wear face masks and social distance pre and post race. All spectators and volunteers are required to wear face masks at all times.
The Virtual Race can be run or walked anytime at participant’s convenience. All virtual times can be logged by the participant in a separate Virtual Race category (no awards).
Note: COVID guidelines will be monitored to make sure race is in compliance with the guidelines in effect at time of the race; participants will be notified as soon as possible if any adjustments need to be made.
The start of both the 5 Mile Run and Walk will be a “Rolling” start, which means participants will begin the race when they arrive at the start line, any time between 8:00 am and 9:30 am. We encourage those who are already on the Island to take advantage of the earlier start times to reduce congestion in the staging area.
Face masks must be worn pre and post race, including the start and finish line. Participants may remove their mask when they have started the event and are socially distanced from others. Masks must be worn after crossing the finish line (we will provide a mask at finish if you do not have one).
Race bibs will be mailed to all participants who register by May 2, 2021. Runners and walkers should arrive with their bib, prepared to begin their race. The Start will be outside Fort Mackinac on Huron Road.
There will be no packet pickup prior to the event for all those registered prior to May 2, 2021 – those bibs will be mailed and shirts will be picked up in the new Huron Road Pavilion (just east of Fort Mackinac) after each participant has finished their race.

Fort doors will be open and rest rooms available inside. Restrooms are also available outside at the Huron Road Pavilion.
Race will start on Huron Road behind Fort Mackinac. Race will finish in on the lawn behind and east of Fort Mackinac. (Please note, finish area will NOT be on the parade grounds as in prior years – we will finish on the opposite side of the street near the Pavilion).

Cancellation Policy – We do not offer registration refunds for any event, though we will allow transfers at a $10 fee. If state mandated Covid 19 restrictions required a cancellation, participants will have a choice of deferral to a future race date or transfer to the Virtual Race,
All race bibs will be mailed to those who register prior to May 2, 2021. All others will pick-up at the Huron Road Pavilion, just behind and east of Fort Mackinac. From the ferry lines, take Fort Road up the hill or enter front doors of Fort (doors will be open to pass through Fort).
Please plan to arrive on the Island with adequate time to walk to the Fort (approximately 10-15 minute walk) so you can conveniently start your race. Start line will be open from 8:00 am to- 9:30 am. We encourage those who are already on the Island to take advantage of the earlier start times to reduce congestion in the staging area.
Race Day Registration
There will be NO RACE DAY REGISTRATION
There will be NO Gear Check. We encourage you to take advantage of the storage locker rental at both Ferry Line docks. You can, however, leave gear in the area near the Pavilion at your own risk, but there will be no volunteer monitoring the area. We are not responsible for any lost, stolen or damaged items and ask that you not store any valuables (i.e. wallets, purses, computers, iPods, etc.) at race site.
Race begins on Huron Road behind Fort Mackinac with a “Rolling Start”. Participants will run or walk to Arch Rock, then follow Leslie Trail to North Bicycle Trail arriving at Garrison Road behind the Scout Barracks. They will follow Garrison past cemeteries to Fort Holmes Road, proceeding up the hill to circle Fort Holmes. From Fort Holmes, the course will travel back down the hill to Garrison Road, then follow Custer Road to turn left on Huron. The last portion will go past Governor’s Cottage to finish behind Fort Mackinac on the Parade Grounds.

Age Group Awards – In Person Race Only (no awards for the Virtual Race)
Overall and Masters male and female, and top three (3) finishers in each division.
There will be no official award ceremony—all awards will be available for pickup after noon on race day in Marquette Park (across from Doud’s Market on Main Street, the lawn area in front of the Fort). We will be there to pass out awards from 12:00 noon – 1:30 pm. We ask that you make every effort to get your award or, if you will no longer be on the Island to pick up your award, please make plans for someone to get it for you.

Photos will be provided to all race participants. You can view your photos on your results page and download or share for free!
Race will be scored with the ChronoTrack B-Tag located on your bib, you must wear your bib in full view to be scored. Results will be posted online during the race and finalized after the last finisher (remember that a rolling start means the results will change until the last finisher crosses the line). Please check posted results soon after your finish so we can make corrections before awards are given out – and check results after 11:30 to see if you’ve placed in the top 3 finishers in your age group and are eligible for an award.

All race participants will enter the Fort free of charge using their race bib as entry. Family members will receive a discount on entrance tickets to Fort. The Tea Room inside the Fort will be open at 9:00 for hot & cold beverages and pastries. Lunch is served from 11:00—3:00 in the Tea Room with a spectacular view of the Island under the Yellow Umbrellas!
